Monroe Street Cemetery

Monroe Street Cemetery

Take a Hike: Summer Series tour

August + Sept | Thursdays | 6pm

Step into the past at one of Cleveland’s oldest burial grounds, where the stories of everyday people helped shape the city we know today. Established in 1836, Monroe Street Cemetery is the final resting place of early settlers, laborers, immigrants, and visionaries whose hard work and perseverance laid the foundation for Ohio City and Cleveland’s growth.

As you explore the grounds, you’ll notice a rich mosaic of cultural backgrounds—most notably English, Irish, Belgian, and German—alongside families of Hungarian, Dutch, Scottish, and other heritages. Designated a Historic Landmark by the City of Cleveland Landmarks Commission in 1973, Monroe Street Cemetery is a journey through history, heritage, and the quiet legacy of a hardworking community.
